High-quality, multi-colour printing on three-dimensional promotional products with unusual, uneven or round surfaces, and special material properties, present special requirements when it comes to printing. Pad printing has established itself as one of the solutions for printing on promotional products and advertising media when these special requirements are the case.
Pad printing is an intaglio ('engraved') printing process characterised by speed and relatively low cost. A recessed metal or plastic printing plate is covered with ink; the plate is then wiped clean, leaving ink in the recessed areas. A highly elastic pad (silicon rubber) is then pressed against the plate, pulling the ink out of the recesses, and pressing and transferring it directly onto the three-dimensional promotional product.
Pad printing allows for a very high quality of printing, particularly in the case of very small fonts and logos. This makes it a highly suited printing process for promotional products and advertising media with small advertising surfaces, for example, key rings, writing instruments and lighters, or other promotional products with uneven surfaces. Pad printing is the most important printing process for promotional products, giveaways and advertising media, and has become an indispensable process in the promotional products industry.

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) consists of 14 basic colours. These 14 basic colours are mixed in different ink quantities to create all of the other colours of the system. Each colour has a unique coded number and is presented in a fan format (Pantone Formula Guides) and a ring binder (Pantone Solid Chips).

The Pantone Matching System is printed on three types of paper:
- coated
- uncoated
- matte

In addition, the fans also state information such as, e.g. the mixing percentages and formulas for the basic colours (the colour mixing formula). The same colour mixing formula is used for all paper types; however, the appearance of a colour may vary on the different types of paper.

The aim behind creating the Pantone Matching System was not to establish a uniform appearance of the colours on all substrates; but rather to illustrate the appearance of a standard colour mixing formula on different types of paper and substrates:
It is for this reason that the colour fans of Pantone Matching System are not only labelled with their unique codes, but also with the corresponding abbreviation for the type of paper (C = coated, U = uncoated and M = matte).

The Pantone Matching System has established itself as the global industry standard for graphic design and printing. The use of other colour matching systems is usually limited to certain regions, e.g. the HKS colour matching system in the German-speaking countries.

It is also recommended to state the Pantone colour code when manufacturing and printing promotional products, giveaways and advertising media. Today, almost all manufacturers and suppliers of promotional products can use the Pantone Matching System to print these colours on promotional products and advertising media.

Pantone is a registered trademark of Pantone Europe GmbH.
