The PSI Sustainability Awards Jury

The Sustainability Awards are aimed at helping to improve not just the promotional products world but the world in general. That’s a big goal. To help achieve it, we’ve asked people to join our awards jury who care deeply about sustainability. All of them have proven throughout their careers that they know how to use responsibility to make a real impact.

The PSI Sustainability Awards evaluation system consists of two parts, which contributes to its transparency: first, a predefined scoring system assigns a score to all queried and supplied data. The stricter and more important the profile of a certificate, the higher the participant’s score. Also taken into account will be the type and size of the company as well as the production site and/or production facilities. But in-house corporate initiatives addressing environmental and social issues will also be evaluated.

Generally speaking, the jury will evaluate any aspects touching on companies and products that are not already captured by official certificates or quality seals. In particular, this refers to participating in-house initiatives, which may range from transparent production guidelines and processes to corporate culture to social commitment.

Extremely high standards were used to select the members of the jury.

Lutz Gathmann


Trained as steel engraver with master craftsman status; government-certified design engineer; lead designer at UVEX Sport and Safety in Fürth and NiGuRa Optik in Düsseldorf. Founded PRODUKT/DESIGN Düsseldorf in 1981; trained as occupational safety engineer. In 2009 PRODUKT/DESIGN relaunches as “Design plus Produktsicherheit”.

Melissa Streif

Melissa Streif serves as the process specialist for Governance, Risk, Compliance & Technology at Warth & Klein Grant Thornton. Melissa’s activities are focussed on consulting well-known SMEs on the sustainable digitalisation, optimisation and automation of processes. As an ONR 49003/ISO 31000-certified risk manager, she advises on IT-based internal control systems and risk management. Melissa’s industry expertise is strongest in the areas of retail and consumer goods, information and communication technology, and mechanical engineering.

Karsten Schmidt

Karsten Schmidt is Director of Corporate Procurement, Facility and TQM at Bertrandt AG. Together with the respective teams, he is responsible for all strategic and operational issues in his area of responsibility within the Bertrandt Group. Karsten Schmidt is with Bertrandt since 1999. He holds a degree in Business Economics.

Clemens Arnold is an expert for sustainability in the event, trade fair, congress and sports industry. He offers comprehensive consulting for companies, associations, organisations, event organisers and agencies, especially on social issues and questions of communicating sustainable development, among others at Lufthansa Training & Conference Center, Hays AG, Vodafone GmbH, Allianz Global Investors GmbH and many more. With the training as Corporate Responsibility Manager at the University of Bayreuth and as a trainer of the German Sustainability Code, he accompanies companies, associations and institutions in the development of sustainability strategies as well as in the introduction and implementation of sustainability management systems.

Kjell Harbom

Kjell Harbom has been the CEO and President of the Swedish Industry organisation SBPR for the promotion industry for 12 years. Inhale also been President of NAPA the industry organisation for the Scandinavian Countries. During this period he has been working close to the Swedish Chemical Inspection, who is a member of Echa.

Carey Trevill

Carey Trevill hails from a successful agency background with award-winning campaigns across broadcast and non-broadcast media for global brands. She is an experienced business owner which has included the M&A of her own business going on to manage the UK flagship for global agency group TLC Marketing Worldwide. Swapping stages to work in trade and industry, she was Managing Director of The Institute of Promotional Marketing until 2018 which included a position on the Committee of Advertising Practice in the UK (CAP) examining the broadcast and non-broadcast advertising regulations in the UK. She remains an expert promotional advisor on CAP’s promotional panel. Carey took up her role as CEO of the BPMA in 2020, working closely with members to support their businesses during the unprecedented economic upheaval of the pandemic. During the last 18 months, Carey has been working with the BPMA board and members on the sustainable position for merchandise in the UK, helping create new goals for the industry which has included conducting research and working groups to examine the UK’s promotional merchandise journey in sustainable demand and opportunity.

Peter van Gestel

Chief editor PromZ Vak and PromZ Magazine

Peter is editor-in-chief of PromZ Vak and PromZ Magazine, two trade magazines in the promotional products industry. Peter has gained a lot of experience in marketing (communication) both on the client and agency side. Sustainability is one of the important editorial spearheads of the magazines he is responsible for. There is still far too much greenwashing in our world and communicative demands that cannot be met. Something must be done about this.

Hilke Lehmann

Senior Officer Group Marketing DB AG

After starting her career in tourism and graduating with a degree in business administration from the University of Lüneburg, Hilke Lehmann has been working in corporate marketing at Deutsche Bahn AG for several years. In addition to DB's major sponsoring commitments, she is also responsible for the DB Group's promotional products and the, among other things. The 'green' DNA of Deutsche Bahn and the climate target set in the group strategy is an important orientation in everything.
