Schwan-STABILO achieved a solid result in 2017/18
The Schwan-STABILO group of companies has published its balance sheet for the financial year 2017/18 (as of 30 June 2018). According to this, "a solid overall result was achieved on the international markets, to some extent under difficult conditions". After many years of growth of the family-owned company, which is already in its fifth generation, the turnover of 685.4 million euros is slightly below the excellent result of the previous year (713.5 million euros). The Group divisions Writing Instruments and Outdoor enjoyed a positive development. In particular, the Group division STABILO managed to increase turnover in a stagnant writing instruments market by 4.9 per cent to 193.4 million euros (previous year: 184.4 million euros). The Group division Outdoor boasted an equally positive development, increasing its turnover by 3.1 per cent to 169.3 million euros (previous year: 164.2 million euros). In the Cosmetics segment, turnover dropped to 322.4 million euros (previous year: 364.7 million euros) due to changing consumer trends, especially in the American and Asian markets.
The Group division STABILO was able to significantly increase its market share despite a stagnating overall market. "As a matter of fact, we are number one in Germany, and in Europe we have strengthened our second place in the product categories that are relevant for us. We owe this success first and foremost to our highlighters. At the present time, every second highlighter sold in Europe carries the brand name STABILO," says Sebastian Schwanhäußer, the managing partner. With growth of around 5 per cent to 193.4 million euros, the writing instrument range has grown considerably compared to the previous year. According to Sebastian Schwanhäußer, this trend could be confirmed in the current financial year: "Digital developments will certainly determine the future of the market, but learning to write will continue to be part of our culture. STABILO wants to be at the forefront in both fields." Above all, the high demand for markers in soft pastel shades has ensured STABILO new sales records. Compared to the previous year, production at the Weißenburg plant has almost doubled in this segment. Another important sales driver has proved to be the classic school pen. With the STABILO Easybuddy, the company has already established a second product in this sector in the market.
"The Schwan-STABILO group of companies stands on a very stable foundation," summarises Schwanhäußer and adds. "We need this stability to drive new developments. However, it will now be more important than ever to stay close to the customer and launch products that create real eye-catching effects. But I am convinced that Schwan-STABILO is always good for surprises – in all three sectors." At the reporting date, 4,899 people (previous year: 5,019) worked in the Schwan-STABILO Group worldwide. Of these, 1,956 worked at the two Franconian locations in Heroldsberg (1,551) and Weißenburg (405). www.stabilo-promotion.com
